DCI Probes Killing of Young Woman Amid Surge in Femicide Cases

Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have launched an investigation into the murder of a young woman who was strangled to death by two men in the Jua Kali area of Embakasi, Nairobi.

According to the DCI, the suspects allegedly cornered the victim and assaulted her before fleeing when residents, alerted by the commotion, approached the scene.

The woman, believed to be in her early 20s, was found unresponsive, prompting residents to alert the police.

Upon arrival, detectives discovered the victim's body with her underpants lowered and visible strangulation marks on her neck. The crime scene was documented before her body was transferred to City Mortuary for identification and a postmortem examination.

The incident underscores a worrying rise in femicide cases across the country. Recent data from Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police Eliud Lagat indicates that Kenya has recorded 97 femicide cases in the past three months.

Addressing the crisis, President William Ruto attributed the surge to a mix of criminal activity and societal moral decline.

"As parents, starting with myself, as Kenyans, we must also deal with the moral issue, let us not just finger point as to who should do what, we should start by saying, what shall I do as a Citizen," Ruto remarked at the African Divine Church in Nairobi in November last year.

In response, the president launched a task force led by former Deputy Chief Justice Nancy Baraza to tackle the escalating cases of femicide.
